We were out taking photos for a campaign this past weekend and the girls were being so crazy. Like so out of control that Jeff got out his phone and started taking videos of us behind the scenes. I didn’t even see them til later and was cracking up! In the spirit of full transparency and “keeping it real”, I uploaded them to my Instagram Stories. I got soooo many DMs from you all relating to the struggle and it gave me the idea for this post! We have been blogging together as a family for over a year now and I have learned a few tips and tricks for getting the perfect shot when our kiddos are involved. Whether you are a mom blogger, mom-tographer, or just trying to capture a memory, here is what works for us!
Tip #1: Curb Your Expectations
Be realistic with your expectations for both the photoshoot and the final photos. I find that if I have an exact image in my head that I am trying to create, it never goes as planned. Instead, being in the moment and approaching it from a perspective of just having fun is when I get the best photos.
Tip #2: Plan Ahead
You know your child best, is there a time of day when they are the most joyful? Mornings, after a nap, etc.. plan to shoot at that time. Scope out locations in advance and make a plan of what poses/angles would work there so you are not wasting their limited attention span thinking on the spot. Get your bribery ready, my husband likes to keep skittles in his pockets when we shoot so I know I need to pick them up from the store in advance.
Tip #3: Get Them Involved
Talk about the shoot in advance and get them involved in the preparation. Shop for a new dress, pick out props they like.. letting them have a say in the build up will help encourage them to be excited for the big moment (aka the photo). It will also help to prevent them from being unhappy in uncomfortable outfits or nervous about the unfamiliar situation which all show through in photos.
Tip #4: Capture The Moment Over Posed Ones
Kids don’t always know how to sit still or fake their emotions, so getting them in their natural element will increase the opportunities for laughter and smiles. Bring distractions that also make great props like bubbles, a balloon, etc. Let them play and be ready to capture the candid moments.
Tip #5: Use A High Shutter Speed
To go along with the above tip, kids are rarely sitting still long enough to capture the moment. In order to freeze the action, use a high shutter speed or shoot in burst. I love shooting in burst because it takes several photos in a row instead of one, which is essential for getting the timing just right.
Tip #6: Get On Their Level
If you are taller then your kids, photographing them while you stand up will make them look way smaller then they actually are. Instead, take photos of them from their eye level. You will get a better look at their face, more detail, and a better background, all of which will result in better looking photos.
Photographing kids can definitely be a challenge, but when you get “the shot” it can be so rewarding. I hope these tips were insightful and help you to document your precious memories, they grow so fast!
