Gooooood Morning!!
I’ve been changing up my morning routine and seeing some pretty great results, so I thought I would share them with you all today. One of the biggest changes I have made is implementing some self care BEFORE my kids wake up. I felt myself slipping into a funk after another morning of waking up to kids yelling, cleaning up spilled milk, and using dry shampoo yet again. I had to remind myself that taking care of yourself IS taking care of your kids and if a few extra minutes a day of alone time allows you to be a sane mom, then take it! Changing up my morning routine and adding in some self care makes all the difference in how the rest of my day unfolds.
My morning routine used to be:
– Hot snooze 10 times and wake up after my kids do
– Get ready for the day in a hurry
– Feel grumpy, rushed and stressed
– Spend the day feeling like a hot mess and playing catch up
This is definitely NOT the best way to start your day, yet I would do it all for the extra few minutes of sleep. I decided to make some changes and see how that would effect my day. And let me tell you, the trade off of a few extra minutes of sleep was well worth the outcome. I will share below a few of the things I have done to increase my daily self care (specifically in the mornings) and how that gave me more energy, boosted my mood, and ultimately led to a more productive day.
My Morning Self Care Routine
Tip #1: Prepare The Night Before
My first tip is to prepare as much as you can the night before. This might include laying out clothes for yourself or your kids, packing lunches, etc. Shorten your morning to do list as much as you can to prevent starting off the day overwhelmed and rushed. One thing I have been doing is cutting up fruit and making it easily accessible in the fridge for my hungry and early risers. This way, I’m not bombarded first thing in the morning with two hungry kiddos. I have also been spending time in the evenings helping the girls pick out their outfits for the next day, and most mornings they come downstairs already dressed!
Tip #2: Avoid My Phone
This is a hard one for me! Since I am not a morning person, it’s easy for my to grab my phone while still in bed and wake up slowly. I would scroll mindlessly through Instagram, Facebook, work emails, personal emails… Social media can really be unhealthy when you start seeing highlight reels and fall into the rabbit whole of comparison or read through everyone’s the political opinions. Checking my work emails can make me feel overwhelmed and like I’m falling behind. All of this already starts my day off on the wrong foot. And guess what? All of the posts and emails will still be there later when you are ready to finally check everything, so don’t rush it.
Tip #3: Enjoy Your Morning Cup
You guys.. this is a BIG one for me. I was having a conversation with a girlfriend the other day who doesn’t own a microwave. My first thought was “how do you reheat your coffee and tea”? I am so bad at drinking my morning cup when we are rushing around that I end up reheating it in the microwave about five times. Yes, five times for one cup of coffee or tea. My morning cup of something hot is something I really look forward to in the mornings, which is good because I am definitely not a morning person.
I have also been switching out my morning coffee for teas. Your body just went 8 hours without water while you were sleeping, so it needs to rehydrate. I think a warm cup of tea is a great way to do this! One of my favorite teas to use is TeaWell™. TeaWell is a brand new brand of organic wellness teas that include the Daily Wellness Core, which is a blend of herbs that support the mind and body*. It is the first brand to deliver both amazing health benefits* and a great taste for everyday consumption. With five different flavors, TeaWell is an easy addition to your morning self care routine. You can purchase it at Sprouts stores or a local retailer to try it for yourself! Don’t forget to use the coupon at the end of this post!
Tip #4: Take A Shower
This is something I rarely ever did before school drop off.. mostly because I was rushed and just didn’t care how I looked for that. But as my days go on, they only get busier. I would end up throwing one toddler in there with me and focusing more on cleaning her and grabbing every bath toy she requested. So now I am trying to do this before they wake up. It’s so nice to have an unhurried shower with time to wash my hair, shave my legs, and basically just stand there under the warm water. Afterwards, I do some additional early morning pampering including my favorite body lotion, a quick skincare routine, and maybe even touch up my hair. This makes such a difference in my day and how I feel about myself!
