I’m not one to speak/blog about major issues or political debates. I honestly don’t feel like I’m educated enough to speak out or to be a good resource. But I also now realize that being silent is NOT the answer.
I was watching Desi Perkin’s IG stories yesterday and she was talking about black mothers across the country having conversations with their children about how to respond if they are ever in an interaction with police officers. Yes sir, no sir, no sudden movements. These important conversations were just as common in their households as having the talk about “the birds and the bees”. This really resinated with me as I’ve never even considered having this conversation with my children. How naive of me.
It also got me thinking of my sister, who is currently pregnant with biracial twin boys. She will most likely be having that same conversation with them one day. Those boys, my nephews, could feel unsafe in the presence of a police officer and face inequality. That is not okay. Their life matters to me. Black lives matter.
There is no excuse anymore for being naive and ignorant with so much information available out there. If you are anything like me and want to actively make a change instead of staying silent… start in your own home. The most important thing you can do is to teach your children that kindness and love will always win.
