Q+A With My Hair Stylist: Tips For Your Best Hair Yet

Living in San Diego obviously has it’s many perks. One of my favorites is the access to so many amazing hair stylists and makeup artists. For the last 8 years I’ve had the privilege of going to Renee for all my hair needs, from my everyday color to the updo on my wedding day. She is an extremely talented hair stylist and I have watched her grow into a mega beauty business babe and open her own salon, Studio Feathers. It’s pretty cool to see the power of hustle and talent come together!

Considering the number of questions I get asked about my hair on Instagram, the topic is definitely not featured enough on my blog. I asked you guys to send me all your hair questions so I could ask my stylist, and today I am sharing all her answers with you. The tips are really helpful and I think you will learn something new. I sure did!

Questions:

What are your tips for getting the best wavy style?

After you are finished curling your hair wait to touch them until everything has cooled. Then flip your head upside down and spray with a dry texturizer before running your hands through it.

What is the best color shampoo/treatment for blondes?

A purple shampoo. My favorite is the Alter Ego silver maintain shampoo. They also have a conditioner. I recommend the Monat masque in between shampooing and conditioning your hair. I also like the Kevin Murphy Angel Masque for finer hair and the Hydrate Me Masque for thicker hair. I prefer a masque more then a conditioner for blondes because it will give you the most moisture for your hair.

What is your coloring process for Kristy? Highlights, lowlights or both?

Highlights with natural lowlights. I use her natural color as the lowlight to make it stay as bright as possible and not brassy. The process is traditional highlighting and foilyage, painting, and balayage between the foils for extra brightness. Highlights are closer together in the front area around her hairline to brighten around her face and then more natural throughout.

How do I prevent hair tangling overnight?

Sleep with your hair loosely tied up. You can also use a satin pillow case to help prevent tangling around the hairline.

How to stop washing your hair so much?

Dry shampoo! Find the right products to make it not greasy at the root, such as Daviness products because they are more dry. I also recommend the Kevin Murphy doo-over which is half hair spray and half dry shampoo. Try to avoid touching and playing with your hair.

What hair color do you use?

Kevin Murphy because it is as natural as they come and has no ammonia. It does include pomegranate seed oil which helps hair breath while it lifts and processes. It also includes antioxidants for anti-aging.

How often does Kristy get her hair done?

Every four months, 3 times per year.

What is purple shampoo? Does it really work? Is it even necessary?

Yes and yes. Purple shampoo helps to keep the brass out and maintain freshness as if you just got it done. There are brands that are more pigmented then others. Kevin Murphy is good but less pigmented and safer to use on a daily basis. Since purple shampoo deposits pigment it isn’t moisturizing, so stick with the purple shampoo over purple conditioner.

At home hair masques or things to pamper your hair?

Coconut oil is good but not when it’s humid out, it is almost like putting a blanket on top of your hair. Add some peppermint or spearmint into your coconut oil to help it penetrate instead of resting on top. You could also add a little castor oil to it to help hair to grow. Add apple cider vinegar to make your hair super shinny and it will add moisture as well. If you do a coconut oil hair masque, you will want to shampoo it out at least 2-3 times.

What is a Green Circle Salon? (This was my question)

We donate all hair clippings from the cuts to make mats to soak up oil spills in the ocean. They also use it to make pet beds for pets displaced from natural disasters. They can even make plastic out of hair that is biodegradable. We recycle used foils (which normally can’t be recycled since there is color on them) to companies who take any metals and liquify it and capture the toxic gas to put in landfills to help break them down. Lastly, we recycle the water that we wash color out with and people can make paint out of it.
